For India today, its foundational foreign exchange reserves are very weak. Its main sources of income are remittances from overseas workers and agricultural exports. To secure foreign exchange through agricultural exports, India has suppressed its domestic agricultural supply, leading to shortages in certain regions. Additionally, natural disasters have caused reduced yields of crops such as potatoes and tomatoes. As a result, the conflict between India's agricultural practitioners and the opinion leaders who advocate for their rights, on one side, and New Delhi, on the other, is extremely intense. Based on past examples, such disputes have typically ended with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) making compromises.


At this point, a relatively viable means to alleviate India's economic situation is to seek foreign aid to obtain necessary resources. Russia, with its extremely low oil and gas prices, has become an ideal trading partner.


(2) Therefore, when Western countries demanded that India suspend the purchase and export of Russian oil, they effectively pushed Modi into a corner on multiple levels. Meanwhile, the internal chaos in India has also compelled him to adopt relatively high-handed measures to alleviate domestic pressure—such as the India-Pakistan conflict in May.


Under normal circumstances, the original plan was for the Indian army to advance into Pakistan, but the prepared aerial offensive unexpectedly suffered a setback. As a result, the entire operation essentially ended in failure.


In reality, Trump's 50% tariff on India, coupled with Western countries' demands for an oil embargo, became the final straw that broke the back of India's current foreign policy. Directly transferring cost benefit to fuel consumers would have been better. Instead the government has chosen to give minor cuts in GST and maintain fiscal deficit. Removing the windfall tax on corporations minting skyhigh margins however makes no sense.

Before I can answer this what I'd want to know is if India changes its source from Russia to let's say international markets how much will the oil demand change the oil price in the international markets. Indian import from Ruskis is about 1.5% of the total international market.

Until December 2024 there was a windfall tax on petroleum companies which transferred gains from discounted oil prices from these companies to the government.

India benefits and so does the wider oil markets. If India wasn't shopping Russian oil, everyone else would have felt the pain. Oil Analysts were speculating 140$/barrel for oil if Russian supplies were knocked out totally (in June 2022). This would have inflamed prices for consumers everywhere.   
  
There is a reason US/Europe allowed it for the entirety of 2022, 2023 and 2024 and first 6-months of 2025....they were not blind for all of these three years. 

India benefits in two ways: 

1) Lower international prices allows government to raise taxes from petro sales...this obviously benefits the budget math

2) Lower prices also mean lesser burden on fertilizer subsidy (the ones made from natural gas) and nil out go on petroleum subsidies. Manmohan Singh governments had to incur expenses of almost 2-lakh crore to provide cushion from rising oil prices between 2004-2013. 

So it is all CIA-paid/ISI-sponsored bunkum boohaa that common Indian didn't benefit from Russian oil. Benefits were all indirect.
